Chandler History
Chandler’s townsite office was first opened in 1912 by Dr. Alexander John, a member of Mormon settlers who founded Mesa. During the same year, Chandler High School was established; soon after a town center was built along with the Hotel San Marcos, Arizona’s first golf resort. Much of central and southern Arizona during this time period experienced an significant increase in tourists seeking a “wild west” adventure.
During the 1900s the stock market and subsequent cotton industry crash led to economic hardship for Chandler residents, and as a result the building of a second San Marcos hotel was cancelled. In the early 1940s, Williams Air Force Base was constructed which led to a spurt in population growth; however, in 1950 the town still only had an estimated 3,800 people living in it. By the 1980s that number would grow nearly ten-fold, to over 30,000 residents.
Chandler’s continued growth over the next several decades was mostly in part due to large computer-related manufacturing firms, such as Microchip, Intel, and Motorola. Leading up to the new millennium, the downtown Chandler area experienced a spike in crime, which led to a series of illegal immigrant round-ups and lawsuits against law-enforcers and lawmakers over discriminatory racial profiling pursued.

Chandler is comprised of 58 square miles (150 km2), of which, only 0.17% is water. Chandler is physically incapable of expanding its land area as it is bound in by Phoenix, Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe, and the Gila River Indian Community. The city’s elevation is 1,214 ft (370 m) and the area’s average temperature throughout the year is 87°F (30.6°C).
