William “Bobby” Gilbert is credited for founding the town of Gilbert in 1902, after providing the land to the Arizona Eastern Railway, who was commissioned to build a railway between Phoenix and Florence. About a decade later, the town saw a significant influx in Mormon settlers who fled Mexico in part to the actions of revolutionary general Pancho Villa.
Gilbert was incorporated on July 6, 1920 and for the next several decades was considered a prime farming community thanks to the Eastern and Consolidated Canals, plus the construction of the Roosevelt Dam. At one point, Gilbert was known as the “Hay Capital of the World”.
It wasn’t until around the 1970s when Gilbert began to grow into the town it is today, mainly due to the annexation of 53 square miles (85.3 km2) of county land. The foresight to plan for the town’s future turned out to be a good decision, as the late 1990s and early 2000s brought several thousand residents to the area.
Gilbert is currently comprised of 76.0 square miles (197 km2) because of annexations in 2009. The town is bordered by Chandler, Queen Creek, Apache Junction, and Mesa.
