Glendale History

Prior to the construction of the Arizona Canal Co. project by William J. Murphy, and Arizona builders M.W. Kales, Clark Churchill, and William A. Hancock in 1882, Glendale was merely empty desert land. One of the earliest settlers in Glendale was William H. Bartlett, a fruit farmer who started a 640-acre fruit farm shortly after the canal was built. The Bartlett farm, which later would become known as Sahuaro Ranch, had a main house and 13 other buildings scattered throughout the property.

In the early 1900s, families began to settle in Glendale, and within a relatively short time frame, the city became one of the most culturally diverse in the Phoenix-Metro area. Many settlers were early Hispanic immigrants as well as Russian and Japanese families who found their way to Glendale by way of California.

WWII influenced the area in more than one way. First, the war caused cotton prices to skyrocket and Glendale was home to many cotton farms. Then, the birth of Thunderbird Field and construction of Luke Air Force Base a short time after, brought many young men to the area seeking military training. Glendale continued to steadily grow throughout the later part of the 20th century.

Today, Glendale is home to professional sports teams – the Phoenix Coyotes, an NHL team that plays at Jobing.com Arena and the Arizona Cardinals, an NFL team that plays at the state of the art University of Phoenix stadium.
