Tempe was originally inhabited by the Hohokam, who were known to have built a vast canal system throughout the Phoenix area to support their agriculture. The large majority of Hohokam migrated out of the state around the 15 century and it wasn’t until the mid-1800s that new settlers began to inhabit the region.
In 1879 a pioneer named Darrell Duppa gave Tempe its name, after comparing the Salt River butte to the Vale of Tempe near Greece’s Mount Olympus. In 1885, Tempe was chosen for the site of the Territorial Normal School, today known as Arizona State University after going through several name changes. Shortly afterwards, the Maricopa and Phoenix Railroad built a bridge to connect the town to the main railway line.
Tempe experienced steady growth throughout the 1900s, mainly due to the growth of ASU; however, the commerce sector has helped fuel much of the growth in recent years. In 1960, Tempe’s population was just shy of 25,000, nearly three times as many residents as there were in 1950. By 2000, Tempe’s population was over 150,000.
Tempe is a landlocked city with a total of 40.2 square miles (104 km2) of land and is bordered by Mesa (to the east), Scottsdale (to the north), Guadalupe and Phoenix (to the west), and Chandler (to the south).
